Cotes de Bourg

Cotes de Bourg appellation is reserved for red and white still wines, located north east ( Red ) within the Bordeaux wine area as seen in our Bordeaux wine glass.

Cotes de Bourg in 2010 covered nearly 4,000 hectares, providing an annual production of around 190,000 hectoliters of wine prepared by nearly 430 producers.

Due to the AOC regulations the plantation density is set to a minimum of 4,500 vines per hectare.

On the western boundary you have the limestone cornice,  then you have the central system which consists of all the hillsides and the summit paleo delta area.  This is the old flat land where the river divides into smaller rivers before flowing into the sea.

Cotes de Bourg wines are mainly red,  however there is also a small amount of dry white wine also produced.

Dry white wines from this area generally come from the sauvignon grape variety and are often fresh in the mouth which gives very aromatic fruity notes.  The Semillon grape brings the volume and depth to the mouth, Muscadelle strengthens the floral notes and the Colombard grape variety adds aromatic note of citrus.  These wines are popular in their youth which is one to two years.

Red wines are mainly produced from the following grape varieties:  Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec although lesser known do play a part.
All produce generous, well structured and aromatic wines with good tannic structure.  This makes them particularly suitable for ageing.

Barrel ageing frequently brings complexity and toasted vanilla notes.

Bourg or Cotes de Bourg was initially recognised on 11th September 1936 for it's red wines.  Then in May 1941 it was also recognised for it's white wines.  The grape harvest, wine making, development and ageing of wines are guaranteed in the following municipalities of the department of Gironde:
